Legend of Callanish
Legend of Callanish is an original acrylic and mixed media painting inspired by the mysterious standing stones of Callanish on the Isle of Lewis, off the north-west coast of Scotland. The painting captures the haunting atmosphere of this ancient site, where land, sky, stone and legend seem to meet.
Story Behind the Painting
Callanish is sometimes described as Scotland’s equivalent of Stonehenge, although it is less widely known. Located on the Isle of Lewis, it is a striking ancient stone circle with a tall central monolith surrounded by a complex arrangement of standing stones.
The site dates back around 5,000 years, and its true purpose remains uncertain. One theory suggests it may have been connected with the moon and used as a lunar observatory. Another theory is that it may have been an ancient burial ground.
For me, the most fascinating part is the legend. A man named John Morisone claimed that the stones were once people, turned into rocks after a witch cast a spell on them. Whether history, myth or imagination, Callanish carries a powerful sense of mystery.
In this painting, I wanted to express that haunting atmosphere — the feeling of ancient stones standing quietly within the landscape, holding stories that may never be fully explained.
