Blue Hills
Blue Hills is an original semi-abstract landscape painting inspired by a reservoir high in Dartmoor National Park, Devon. Layers of blue and atmospheric colour evoke frosty hills, winter sunlight and the quiet beauty of the early-morning landscape
Story Behind the Painting
Blue Hills began as a more recognisable view of a reservoir high on Dartmoor. As I built up many layers of colour and sanded parts of the surface back, the original reservoir gradually disappeared. What remained was something more atmospheric — a memory of frosty hills, winter light and the cold, crisp air of Dartmoor early in the morning. I wanted to capture the feeling of sunlight breaking across the landscape and the stillness of the hills, rather than reproduce one exact view.

Texture and Close-Up Details
Layers of acrylic, charcoal, pastel and stencil create depth and atmosphere across the surface. Parts of the painting have been sanded back, allowing earlier layers to emerge and giving the landscape its shifting character. The interplay between colour, texture and expressive marks allows the hills to move between recognisable landscape and abstraction.
Blue Hills brings the quiet atmosphere of the Dartmoor landscape into an interior. Its cool blue tones and layered textures can complement contemporary or traditional surroundings, offering a subtle reminder of winter light, open hills and the stillness of nature.
